Red Bird Mission: Fighting Food Insecurity in Rural Kentucky

In the heart of Clay County, Kentucky, Red Bird Mission has been a steadfast support system for its residents since 1921. Tracy Nolan, Community Outreach and Housing Director, RN, BSN, passionately describes their mission: "We serve Bell, Clay, and Leslie Counties primarily, focusing on hunger relief and addressing social determinants of health to enhance quality of life."

Beyond the scenic mountains, many here battle profound challenges—clean water shortages, septic issues, and living in food deserts, surviving on incomes well below poverty guidelines. "Despite hardships, our community is resilient, innovative, and deeply caring," Nolan emphasizes.

‍

With 40% below poverty guidelines and significant disability rates, hunger-relief efforts are crucial. "We also contend with homelessness, substance use disorders, and untreated mental illness, "Nolan adds, highlighting the need for sustainable solutions.

‍

"Our partnership with God’s Pantry Food Bank is transformative," Nolan explains. It enables Red Bird Mission to provide essential food supplies like fresh produce and proteins through programs like CSFP and TEFAP. "Previously, we could only offer emergency food quarterly; now, thanks to God’s Pantry Food Bank, we serve seniors monthly and households in need more effectively," she says gratefully.

‍

Adopting the Oasis software has revolutionized operations." It streamlines data entry, enhances reporting accuracy, and integrates all our programs," Nolan shares. This efficiency has secured grants for essential infrastructure like refrigeration, expanding their capacity to store and distribute fresh food.

‍

Beyond immediate food relief, Red Bird Mission fosters self-sufficiency. Programs range from community gardens and food preservation classes to educational support and senior meal programs. "We empower individuals to grow their own food and access healthier options," Nolan notes.

‍

Nolan remains optimistic about the future: "Through partnerships, compassion, and divine provision, we envision a nourished life for every Kentuckian." These efforts, bolstered by community support and innovative solutions, are crucial steps towards building resilient, sustainable communities.

‍

Red Bird Mission’s commitment to addressing food insecurity and holistic community support sets a powerful example. With ongoing support and collaboration, they continue to make meaningful strides towards a nourished life for every Kentuckian.
