Lexington-based Pride Community Services Organization strives to improve the lives of all LGBTQ+ individuals in Central and Eastern Kentucky. Formed in 1977, PCSO is the only physical, community-based Pride Center in Kentucky, empowering and enhancing the visibility of community members, educating the public on issues impacting the LGBTQ+ community, and providing valuable programs and support services for the individuals and families they serve.
The People’s Market, PCSO’s onsite food pantry, is one of many ways that the organization supports the LGBTQ+ community. Josie Willis, Food Manager, explains, “The LGBTQ+ community experiences food insecurity at a higher rate than the rest of the population.” She describes the pantry as “..a welcoming, low barrier supplemental grocery for members of the community..” with both one-time and recurring need for food assistance.
As a part of the Food Bank’s MealConnect Program, PCSO receives weekly food donations from Walmart and Starbucks, and they also choose products from the Food Bank in order to provide variety and meet special dietary needs of their visitors. With cold storage, their offerings include not only nonperishable foods, but meat, dairy, and other fresh and frozen items.
Serving both individuals and families, The People’s Market distributes on average more than 2000 pounds of food each week to approximately 120 people and around 60 households through both visits to the pantry and deliveries. The inviting and welcoming atmosphere, according to Willis, has also been a catalyst for many who visit the pantry to also volunteer.
By providing resources and support services, social opportunities, and hosting the Lexington Pride Festival, Pride Community Services Organization is creating a safe and inclusive space for every LGBTQ+ Kentuckian.
