It All Starts with One Step: Abril Carbajal
For Abril, it didn’t take long to realize that volunteering was something more.
“I think I realized that this work really mattered to me after the first time I came and volunteered,” she said. “Meeting the people and seeing the work being done just stuck with me.”
What started as a single experience—serving alongside a group she was ministering with—made a lasting impression. It stayed on her mind, and it kept bringing her back.
Since 2018, Abril has continued to show up, most often in the volunteer center, where that first experience has grown into something deeper.
Seeing the Impact Up Close
One of the things that motivates Abril to keep volunteering is the chance to see the impact firsthand.
“I would encourage others to get involved so they can be more engaged within the community and see the actual impact they can physically have,” she said. “It benefits others along with themselves.”
For Abril, it’s not just about helping—it’s about being present and experiencing how that help makes a difference.
“It creates a community and more of a unification amongst the community,” she added.
The People Who Make It Meaningful
Over time, the work has become closely tied to the relationships she’s built along the way.
“Seeing the different walks of life that come through the volunteer center has really stayed with me,” she shared. “I’ve been able to meet a lot of great people and become really dear friends with those people.”
Those connections are a big part of why she continues to return.
“I get excited every time I get to reunite with them and do what I think is good work for the community.”
Taking That First Step
Abril knows that getting started can feel uncertain—but she encourages people not to overthink it.
“Just do it,” she said. “You don’t know—what you don’t know.”
From her perspective, the hardest part is simply beginning.
“Once you step in, you’re going to realize that you’ve been missing out on a lot—giving back, meeting people, and participating in the community.”
Why More People Matter
Abril also points out that many people may not even realize these opportunities exist until someone tells them.
“I wasn’t aware of opportunities until somebody brought them to my attention,” she said.
That’s why inviting more people in matters—it builds awareness and expands the impact.
“The more people, the merrier,” she said. “It truly is a lot more fun with other people.”
For her, volunteering isn’t just meaningful—it’s something to share.
“When you do it with friends and family, it almost feels like a party.”
