Honoring Council Member Shayla D. Lynch: A Black History Month Feature

This Black History Month, God’s Pantry Food Bank proudly highlights Council Member Shayla D. Lynch, a dedicated public servant and passionate advocate for our community. Her commitment to service exemplifies the spirit of Black History Month and uplifts all who work alongside her.

Council Member Lynch’s passion for serving others is rooted in her own experience as a lifelong nonprofit professional. Having worked in the nonprofit sector since graduating from law school, she understands both the challenges and rewards of helping others. “Nonprofits have always had a special place in my heart, because I’m from that community,” she shares. “I think it takes a special kind of individual to work for a nonprofit and to give yourself every single day in service to others.”

Shayla’s inspiration comes from her parents, who led by example in their hometown of Hopkinsville, Kentucky. “They taught me what service is, what it looks like, what it smells like, what it tastes like. From a very young age, my parents would bring my brother and me to community service events, and we both fell in love with serving.” This legacy shaped her commitment to supporting others wherever she’s lived, from college to law school and now in Lexington, where she quickly sought out ways to serve.

For Shayla, Lexington’s nonprofit community is truly special: “We know each other. We take care of each other. We help the same folks to have better lives.”

Through her support of God’s Pantry Food Bank, Shayla focuses on ensuring that families across Kentucky can meet their most basic needs. She emphasizes, “God’s Pantry Food Bank serves folks at the foundational level—helping them to thrive just with basic needs, food. Food is not just needed, but it’s required to live.”

“You’re supporting not just Lexington, but several communities throughout Kentucky and helping folks to meet needs every single day, not just adults but kids too.” In her Councilmember capacity and beyond, Shayla is committed to doing whatever she can to help: “You’re meeting needs and literally saving lives today.”

As we celebrate Black History Month, Council Member Lynch’s leadership reminds us that our greatest resource is one another. In her words, “All we have is us. In these volatile times, we have to rely on each other to rise.” For Shayla, true progress comes from building trust, stepping outside our comfort zones, and coming together as a community to support and uplift each other. “Now is the best time to come together as a community to support each other, to meet each other’s needs, to have open, honest dialogue and conversation so that we can continue to progress forward and not fall backward.”

These words from Council Member Lynch capture the true spirit of service and unity that defines both her leadership and the mission of God’s Pantry Food Bank.

She describes volunteering as “life-giving,” and encourages young people to find their own purpose, even if it takes time and isn’t always easy: “Take the time to figure out what your purpose is and what brings you joy. Once you find it, don’t set it to the side, even if it’s not the moneymaker. Continue to work on it, even in your spare time, because every day you live in your purpose is a blessing.”

Join us in honoring Council Member Shayla Lynch this Black History Month and in building a stronger, more caring community at God’s Pantry Food Bank.
