God’s Pantry Food Bank and the Lexington Public Library have partnered to open a food pantry located in the Library’s Northside Branch. The food pantry expands an existing partnership with the Library, which serves summer meals and after-school snacks at multiple branches.
The Northside Library is a perfect location for making access easier for our neighbors living in North Lexington. Research showed many neighbors living on the north side of Lexington were traveling longer distances to reach a food pantry. For some, it could be up to 1 hour and 45 minutes by bus. A pantry located in this area will alleviate the need for many of our neighbors to navigate lengthy commutes to get the food they need.
“Adding a food pantry in the Northside Branch of the Lexington Public Library enhances our ability to better meet neighbors who are experiencing hunger where they are,” says God’s Pantry Food Bank CEO Mike Halligan. “We know there is a need for food in and around the Winburn area. Reducing travel time and distance will help more neighbors access food to live a more nourished life.”
The pantry provides a welcoming atmosphere where neighbors can shop with dignity for food at a location close to their home. The pantry is stocked with dry goods, canned goods, meat, dairy, and fresh produce.
“The response from the neighborhood has been overwhelming. The families we have served in the first few days have been excited by the variety of food – especially the fresh fruits and vegetables! We are happy for this opportunity to expand our services in partnership with the Lexington Public Library,” says Fayette County Pantry Program Manager Mary Alice Daniels.
You can help us stock the shelves at all of our pantries by hosting a physical or virtual food drive with your family, friends, or at your workplace. For more information, visit godspantry.org/fooddrive.
