Feeding America conducts the Map the Meal Gap study annually to improve our understanding of food insecurity in the United States. The newest study tells us that food insecurity in the 50 counties of Central and Eastern Kentucky that we serve have a food insecurity rate of 16.5%. That’s 253,010 people who are unsure when they will have their next meal.
The study also shows that in our service area 72,550 kids and teens – 21.5% – are trying to learn and grow while hungry.
On May 21, Feeding America released their annual State of Senior Hunger in America report. This report tells us that throughout the state of Kentucky, 16.9% of individuals ages 60 and older are food insecure, and 17.3% of older adults ages 50-59 are hungry – the highest rate in the nation for this age group.
